The Pleasant Valley FD Explorer Post was developed in 1992 to allow
youth involvement in the fire service. The Explorer Program is
designed to educate young adults in the concepts and training involved
in the fire service, and to build character and a sense of Community.
This will provide the community with a supply of prospective members
familiar with the responsibilities of membership and trained in the
skill of Firefighting and Emergency Services.
These goals and objectives are accomplished through classroom training,
guest lectures, ride along experiences, and fireground simulations as
well as through participation in volunteer activities.
The Explorer Program is chartered through the National Exploring
Division and Learning for Life of the Boy Scouts of America and is open
to all young adults 15 through the age of 21. The Federal
Emergency Management Agency and the United States Fire Administration
supports the Fire Explorer Program and provides training material to
local fire departments. The International Association of Fire
Chiefs Foundations also has an annual Scholarship available for Fire
Service Explorers. The Volunteers Fireman's Insurance Services
(VFIS) of York, Pennsylvania has sponsored a contest among fire
department youth programs, annually recognizing a program that
exemplifies high levels of community involvement, effective organization
and similar positive attributes. The Pleasant Valley Volunteer
Fire Department Explorer Post was the First place recipient of the VFIS
Junior Fire and Emergency Service Award in 1999. Their program is
listed in the VFIS Junior Fire Emergency Service Program guide, to help
establish other post programs through the United States.
